MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The International Monetary Fund (IMF) confirmed Wednesday it did not receive loan repayment tranche from Greece due to be paid until June 30.
“I confirm that the SDR 1.2 billion repayment (about $ 1.7 billion) due by Greece to the IMF today has not been received,” Gerry Rice, Director of Communications at the IMF said in a statement.
“I can also confirm that the IMF received a request today from the Greek authorities for an extension of Greece’s repayment obligation that fell due today, which will go to the IMF’s Executive Board in due course,” Gerry Rice said.
Greece's bailout deal with its international creditors also expired on Tuesday. The talks between the parties on extending the deal in exchange for austerity reforms have failed to yield results.
On Saturday, Athens announced a July 5 referendum to ask voters to decide whether to accept a new bailout deal offered by the country's international creditors in exchange for unpopular austerity measures.
