WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US government announced that the skies over Washington, DC were a “No Drone Zone” to make clear that operating unmanned aircraft in the area was illegal, the US federal aviation agency said in a press release.
“As the July 4 holiday approaches, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is reminding residents and visitors to Washington, DC that the city and surrounding communities are a ‘No Drone Zone’,” the release said on Tuesday.
The FAA, the release explained, is declaring the “No Drone Zone” so visitors and residents thoroughly understood that flying unmanned aircraft within Washington or the surrounding areas was against the law.
After the attacks on September 11, 2001, the release explained, the FAA established national defense airspace over Washington that prohibits all aircraft from operating in the area unless authorized by the FAA or the Transportation Security Administration.
On May 14, 2015, a man tried to fly a drone near the White House before being detained by US Secret Service agents.
