MOSCOW (Sputnik) — About 200 protesters remained in the center of Armenia’s capital Yerevan for the overnight protest against the electricity price hike in the country, RIA Novosti correspondent reported on Wednesday.
On Sunday, the marathon rally split into two groups. Some protesters continued to block the main avenue in the government district, while the rest moved to a square nearby to stage a sit-in. A sit-in protest at a central square of Yerevan was announced ended on Tuesday, with activists saying they will draft a plan on how to avoid the government-proposed hike in power bills.
Those stayed on the Marshal Baghramyan Avenue said Wednesday morning that the night passed peacefully, the police took no action against them.
The rally in the South Caucasian nation’s capital began on June 19, two days after the government announced it was going to ramp up electricity prices by over 16 percent beginning in August.
Police were sent in last week to disperse thousands of protesters marching on the presidential residence. Some 240 were detained.
