KIEV (Sputnik) The Ukrainian parliament has ratified a memorandum of agreement with NATO on cooperation in communications and reconnaissance.

"The acceptance of these acts creates a normative legal base for cooperation between the government of Ukraine and NATO in communications and information and defines the main principles of cooperation in regard to consultations, management, communication, reconnaissance, observation, and recognizance within the NATO Partners for Peace program and in the founding of the NATO trust fund project," an explanatory note to the bill reads.

Brussels signed the memorandum on April 24.

This comes after Ukraine scrapped its non-aligned status last year to open the way toward full membership in the NATO military bloc.

Ukraine and NATO accuse Russia of backing east Ukrainian militias and sending troops to the region. Moscow has denied this claim.

After the breakout of fighting in eastern Ukraine, the US-led alliance stepped up its military presence in Eastern Europe, prompting the Kremlin to accuse it of aggressive expansion eastward.
