Shops in the state are set to begin selling marijuana by next year, but a bill with large support will ban retail sales in counties where 55% or more of the residents voted against the legalization.
The end of prohibition on the plant is only extended to residents over 21, the same age as alcohol use. Driving while high and public smoking also remain illegal, similar to regulations on alcohol.
There were no reports of arrests following the countdown celebration in Portland, however.
Adults meeting the age requirement can now grow up to four plants and possess up to eight ounces (227 grams) at home and one ounce outside the home. Marijuana cannot be taken out of state, even to neighboring Washington, where retail sales are also legal.
Oddly, Portland International Airport has stated that local police will not seize your weed at the airport (though federal TSA agents might,) but that you will be subject to local laws when you land.
