“We have signed a legal agreement with the Vatican that defines the relationship between the Catholic Church, which is represented in many countries, and the Palestinian government. And it’s possible that in the next couple of months we will open our embassy in the Vatican,” Maliki said at a press conference in Moscow.
According to the Palestinian embassy in Moscow, Palestine maintains 77 diplomatic and consular representations abroad.
The first Palestinian embassy in Western Europe opened in Sweden’s Stockholm in February.
Palestine is seeking the creation of an independent state. However, the UN Security Council failed to pass a resolution on Palestinian statehood in 2014, as the United States vetoed it.
So far, 135 out of the 193 UN member states recognize the State of Palestine.
