About thirty journalists fell victim of criminal offenses committed outside conflict zones.
Iraq, engulfed in fighting against the Islamic State jihadist group, and France, where Islamist gunmen stormed the office of the Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris in January, proved to be the most dangerous countries for journalists, with eight professionals killed this year in each state.
Ukraine comes third in this list, as four journalists have been killed in the country since January, as Kiev authorities are engaged in a military campaign against independence supporters in the east of the country.
UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic said in mid-June that Ukraine remains the most dangerous destination for journalists reporting from conflict zones.
