Professional hockey player Slava Voynov was sentenced Thursday to 90 days in jail and three years of probation after accepting a plea deal related to domestic assault charges.

Voynov, a 25-year-old defenseman for the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL, entered a no contest plea to a misdemeanor charge of corporal injury to a spouse – his wife, Marta Varlamova.

He must report to jail to begin serving his sentence no later than July 14, according to the OC Register. Voynov must also undergo a year of domestic violence counseling.

Voynov's trial on a felony charge of domestic violence was to begin next week. Prosecutors had alleged Voynov choked and hit his wife and pushed her into a TV during an altercation last year at their home in Redondo Beach.
