MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Osborne, the BBC must make sure it doesn’t crowd out the newspapers and their websites.
“The BBC is a publicly funded public institution. It does need to make savings as we get our house on order. We are in discussions with the BBC … and I am absolutely sure that they can make a contribution,” Obsorne said in an interview with the BBC’s Andrew Marr.
Earlier in the day, the Sunday Times reported that Osborne had launched a $1-billion raid on the BBC to help cover the United Kingdom’s benefits bill.
The Conservative Party, which recently won the UK general election, said it would adopt a three-step approach to reducing the national deficit, including further welfare cuts, departmental spending cuts and revenue from a crackdown on tax avoidance.
The move to reduce the BBC spending is reportedly part of the Conservatives’ promised welfare cuts.
