Amari Brown, 7, was with his father at Humboldt Park on Saturday after spending time with his grandmother for a Fourth of July celebration. At around 11:55 p.m., gunmen opened fire hitting Brown in right side of his chest.
"It's crazy," said Vedia Hailey, the boy’s grandmother, according to The Chicago Tribune. "Who would shoot a 7-year-old in the chest? Who would do that to a baby? When is it going to stop?"
A 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl were fatally shot shortly after midnight while walking in Old Town. A 19-year-old man was shot after two groups exchanged fire following a fireworks display at Navy Pier.
The latest stretch of violence spanned from 9:20 p.m. Saturday to 4:45 a.m. Sunday.
So far this holiday weekend, shootings have killed seven people and wounded 40. Last year, 82 people were shot in 84 hours. 16 of them were killed.
