Kurdish militia, known as the Peshmerga, liberated several areas near the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq from the Islamic State jihadist group, killing fourteen militants, a local security official told the media.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Peshmerga fighters took control of the village of Mura Gawra, south of Kirkuk, as well as the surrounding territories, Sarhad Qadir, the chief of the Kirkuk police, was quoted as saying by the Kurdish media group Rudaw.

ISIL militants tried to regain the areas, but "were pushed back and could not recover the ground," Qadir added, as quoted by Rudaw.
