Located near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital city of Russia's Kamchatka Region, the new Rybachiy submarine base will become the new homeport of Russia's most advanced Borei-class (also known as Dolgorukiy-class), Project 955, fourth-generation submarines.
"The system for basing the Borei-class strategic submarines in Kamchatka is moving along according to schedule and the work will be completed by October 1 of this year," said Admiral Viktor Chirkov, the Russian Navy's Commander-in-Chief, as cited by the Diplomat.
The Admiral also added that the new base will include warehouses and a new crane to install missiles on the submarines.
Russia's Pacific Fleet has received new ships in the last couple of years. Currently, the Far Eastern submarine force has five nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, five nuclear-powered guided missile submarines, five nuclear-powered attack submarines and eight conventional submarines, according to the Diplomat.
