WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The reduction to both domestic and foreign posts would bring the US Army down to 450,000 soldiers by the end of 2017, according to a document obtained by USA Today.
The cuts come in response to the winding down of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as budget cuts facing the Pentagon.
If across the board budget cuts, also known as sequestration, hit the US Army in October of 2015, an additional 30,000 troops could be cut, according to the report.
“At that level, the Army would not be able to meet its current deployments and responding to demands for troops in other regions,” USA Today said.
An announcement by the US Army and more details on the force reduction are expected later this week.
