WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Greek overall debt stands at about $350 billion, $270 billion of which is owed to the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund and some eurozone countries.
“I am not aware of any specific financial assistance on the part of the United States that is being considered for Greece at this point.”
On Sunday, the majority of Greeks voted to ditch creditors’ proposals that envisaged harsher austerity in exchange for a new cash injection.
Earnest said on Monday that the European Union and Greece should find a compromise to resolve the Greek debt crisis. He added that only implementation of financing reforms will allow Athens to remain part of the Eurozone.
Obama Urges Greek Prime Minister to Reach Agreement With Creditors
US President Barack Obama has called on Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to reach consensus on the bailout deal with the international creditors, the White House said in a press release on Tuesday.
“The President [Obama] reiterated that it is in everyone’s interest that Greece and its creditors reach a mutually-acceptable agreement.”
The White House added that Tsipras also updated Obama on his ideas for a path forward between Greece and its creditors.
In Sunday’s referendum, over 61 percent of the Greek public voted "no" on whether or not the country should accept creditors’ demands for spending cuts and tax increases in exchange for another loan.
White House Press spokesperson Earnest said on Tuesday that Washington does not plan to provide financial assistance to Greece amid the country’s debt crisis.
