BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Greece shouldn’t be stopped from leaving the Eurozone, Former Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga said Wednesday.

Greeks voted against the new austerity plan demanded by its international creditors in a July 5 referendum. An emergency Eurogroup meeting and a following Eurozone summit, both on Tuesday, failed to find a solution to the debt crisis.

“The real question is whether we can keep Greece in the Eurozone and at whose expense?” Vike-Freiberga said, in an interview with the Belgian RTBF radio. She added that she could not see the possibility.

“We shouldn’t forget that Greece – if I am right – has received €240-billion investments. And I wonder if the rest of Europe is able to afford conducting such money into this bottomless pit,” Vike-Freiberga said.

Greece's overall debt stands at about $350 billion, of which $270 billion is owed to the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund and several Eurozone countries.

In a referendum on Sunday, over 61 percent of Greek voters rejected the unpopular austerity measures demanded by Athens' major international creditors, triggering renewed fears of a Greek default and subsequent exit from the Eurozone.
