MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Failure to adopt a British draft resolution in the UN Security Council condemning the 1995 killings in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica as genocide is an "insult" to Srebrenica's victims, UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Wednesday.
The resolution was vetoed earlier in the day by Russia. Ten of the Security Council's 15 members voted in favor of the document, while four abstained.
"The failure to adopt this Resolution is a snub to the families of the victims and the survivors of Srebrenica. True reconciliation requires facing up to the realities of the past by all sides and determination to learn the lessons for the future," Hammond was quoted as saying on a UK government website.
Republika Srpska's President Milorad Dodik warned that the resolution could bring about the disintegration of Bosnia and Herzegovina, if is was adopted.
According to Hammond, the British resolution for the commemoration of Srebrenica victims and victims on all sides of the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina, calls for reconciliation and "justice for all," and "did not point fingers of blame nor seek to reopen painful divisions."
"We owe it to all those who lost their lives in the war to work together to help build a safe and prosperous Bosnia Herzegovina," Hammond added.
