US Effectively Coordinates With Russia in Iran Nuclear Talks - White House
20:05 GMT 09.07.2015 (Updated: 10:20 GMT 06.08.2022) Russian negotiators have played a constructive role in Vienna by trying to persuade Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons program, White House spokesperson Josh Earnest told reporters on Thursday.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and US State Secretary John Kerry both said on Thursday that Iran and the P5+1 group of international negotiators are working hard but not rushing to reach a nuclear agreement in Vienna.
“We have been…able to effectively coordinate with the Russians to advance the interests of the United States. Russian negotiators have been active and constructive participants in Vienna…as we compel Iran to take the steps to shut down every pathway to a nuclear weapon.”
The long-anticipated agreement envisions sanctions relief for the Islamic republic in exchange for the curtailment of its nuclear program for a decade or longer.
The remaining issue is said to be Iran’s demand for the UN Security Council to lift its conventional weapons program ban.
On Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Secretary Kerry discussed the final stages of negotiations at Iran nuclear talks in a phone conversation, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
