WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Congress has mandated the US military develop a plan for the Arctic, but the Defense Department has not developed a detailed strategy and plan, including military forces that would support US objectives.
“We will develop an appropriate role for the military in support for our economic and political interests in the Arctic,” Dunford told a Senate confirmation hearing.
Defense officials have admitted that Russia, which regularly carries out military operations in the Arctic, is ahead of the United States in developing a military capability in the region.
