Five airports in Indonesia remain closed on Friday, with a cloud of volcanic ash forcing the cancellation of flights in and out of Bali's Denpasar Airport, as well as four other affected airports in Lombok and East Java, at the height of the holiday season.
Mount Raung, in East Java, erupted on July 2. The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre, based in Darwin, Australia, said on Friday that as the volcano is high, at just over 3,000 meters above sea level, and that such eruptions can easily reach aircraft levels; on Friday the ash cloud had reached an altitude of six kilometers near Denpasar in Bali.
