MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Indian Air Force received its first domestically-produced Akash air defense missile systems, local media reported on Friday.
Akash, which means "Sky" in Hindi, is a solid-fuel missile with a 15.5-mile range that carries a warhead containing a 120 pound fragmentation bomb triggered by proximity fuse.
According to media, the fully automated system can neutralize up to eight aerial targets coming on low, medium and high altitudes simultaneously at a speed three times higher than the speed of sound.
