The United States and Spain signed an amendment in mid-June and next week it will be approved by the Spanish parliament. The deal allows Washington to host nearly 3,000 service personnel instead of the current 850. It allows the United States to station 2,200 personnel under normal circumstances and boost the number of aircraft at the base from 14 to 40.
"We are talking about something very serious for the security of Andalusia," Antonio Maillo said.
According to the politician, Spain will become another "target of international terrorism," since the amendment de facto stipulates the creation of a "base for US imperialist aggressive policy in the Northern Africa and Middle East."
"There is no commitment or obligation under the agreement," Maillo added.
After a 2012 attack on the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, the United States asked Spain to enable the Moron base to be used as a rapid response area for emergency situations in Africa.
Initially, Madrid allowed 550 US marines to be deployed at the base. In 2014, Spain extended the mandate and agreed to the number to 850.
