No organization has claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes after several suicide bombings in the capital of Chad in June.
Boko Haram, the Islamic militant group based in neighboring Nigeria, was suspected to be responsible for the June attacks. This year the jihadists have also carried out raids on villages east of the Nigeria-Chad border, in the area around Lake Chad.
On June 29, N'Djamena was hit by two suicide bombs that killed at least 11 people, including five police officers, and injured three more, stated Chad's Minister for Public Security, Abderahim Bireme Hamid.
On June 15, a triple suicide bombing hit a police station and police academy in the capital, killing at least 38 people and injuring more than 100 others. After the attack authorities in Chad announced they identified a 'terrorist cell' responsible for the attacks, and arrested more than 60 suspects from Chad, Cameroon, Mali and Nigeria in connection with the bombings.
