CAIRO (Sputnik) — Egyptian prosecutors said Saturday's car explosion near the Italian consulate in the Egyptian capital city of Cairo is similar to last week’s attack on the country's prosecutor general, local media reported.
On June 29, Egyptian Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat died as a result of a car bombing in Cairo.
The type of explosives used in the both attacks and the way of planting the devices in the vehicles are alike, the Egyptian Masrawy news website said, citing sources in the prosecutor’s office.
The investigators suggest that Saturday's attack might have been aimed against a police post located next to the Italian consulate, according to the news outlet.
On Saturday morning, a car exploded in front of the consulate, killing one person and injuring at least nine. The Italian Foreign Ministry said that no Italians were hurt in the attack.
The explosion severely damaged the front part of the building.
No one has claimed responsibility for the blast.
