On Sunday, Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman escaped from a maximum-security prison outside Mexico City, media reports said. Guzman, who headed the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, has been behind bars since February 2014.
The National Security Commission said that "the escape of Guzman was confirmed" after the kingpin was last seen in the shower area of the Altiplano prison in central Mexico before disappearing.
Guzman, who headed the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, escaped from prison for the first time in 2001 and it took police thirteen years to finally recapture him.
