Police militarization and endemic institutionalized racism in the United States are among the main reasons for ongoing and wide-spread acts of police brutality and the killing of unarmed black men by white police officers in the country, Chuck Kaufman, National Co-Coordinator of the Alliance for Global Justice NGO told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova – A poll conducted by ICM Research exclusively for Sputnik and published on Tuesday has revealed that a third of US citizens see police racism as the main cause of the high number of black people killed by law enforcement in the United States.

“When the mindset of police is closer to a military mindset of seeing the population as an enemy rather than a police mindset of seeing the public as the subject of their protection, plus internalized and institutional racism, you have the current climate in which young black men are killed weekly by US police,” Kaufaman said.

He added that the trend toward militarization in US police departments that has been fueled, in part, by easy credit terms from the US government, has increased over the last ten years.

A January poll by ICM Research showed that 48 percent of US respondents wanted officers to carry more military equipment, while 46 percent were in favor of police carrying less weaponry.

Over the past year, the United States has seen numerous large protests against police brutality and racial profiling, prompted by well-documented cases of police officers killing unarmed black men.
