NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Recent imports of Chinese automobile tires have been flooding the US market at unfair prices while undermining the American tire industry, the US International Trade Commission said in a statement.
“A US industry is materially injured by reason of imports of certain passenger vehicle and light truck tires from China that the US Department of Commerce has determined are subsidized and sold in the United States at less than fair value,” the Commission said on Tuesday.
US Senator Charles Schumer praised the decision and stated China’s practices could have shuttered more than 1,000 jobs in the state of New York alone, where US tire company Goodyear Dunlop has two facilities.
“For the 1,000-plus workers at Goodyear Dunlop in Tonawanda and Niagara Falls, this determination will protect their jobs,” Schumer stated. “It is nearly impossible for an American worker to compete and succeed in the global marketplace while China breaks the rules and employs predatory trade practices.”
In 2014, China exported a record 60.5 million passenger and light truck tires to the United States, representing one-quarter of all domestic replacement consumer tire shipments, according to the industry publication Modern Tire Dealer.
