German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble has an ambitious plan to change the European Monetary Union and the collapse of Greece was part of it, former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis wrote in an article.
Dr. Schäuble is following a plan to ‘clean’ the European Monetary Union. The allegation that the Greek government can’t offer any "credible reforms" was just a pretext. Greece simply became a "victim of a ritual," Varoufakis wrote.
As earlier reported by DWN, Schäuble is intentionally seeking Greece’s withdrawal. In this way, he is sending southern states a clear message: Think about what you want. Either you adhere to the rules voluntarily, or we force you to do it anyway.
On Monday, Eurozone leaders agreed to provide Athens with a three-year 86-billion-euro loan in exchange for tough reforms. However, the success of the program is highly questionable. New austerity measures are unlikely to help Greece out of the crisis, experts assume.
