NEW YORK (Sputnik) — A member of the infamous Gambino organized crime family was arrested in the US state of Ohio for numerous crimes, the Cleveland Police Department (CPD) said in a statement.
“[Carmine] Agnello was arrested on charges that include theft, money laundering, conspiracy, drugging animals before competition, cruelty to animals and corrupting sports,” CPD said in the statement on Wednesday.
Agnelo, 54, was arrested following an 18 month investigation that involved CPD and the New York City Police Department.
“The investigation revealed that between 2014 and the present, Agnello systematically defrauded a regional scrap metal processing facility for more than $3 million,” CPD said.
Agnello is a confirmed member of the Gambino crime family, which is part of a nationwide criminal organization recognized by several law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Various members of the Gambino crime family have previously been accused of drug trafficking, extortion, murder, robbery and other crimes, according to the FBI.
The Gambino crime family is one of the most publicized families of the Mafia in the United States. It received its name after crime boss Carlo Gambino who controlled the family from 1959 until 1976.
