Russia plans to supply Syria with 200, 000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) per year through the Kerch Sea trading port in Crimea.

“There is an ongoing talks of supplying LPG to Kerch first, and then on to Syria, in the amount of about 200 thousand tons per year… Syria is in need of Russian gas,” Reuters reported a spokesman amongst traders as saying.

Before Crimea joined Russia in March 2014, Moscow was supplying Syria with LPG, but the supply volume was significantly less.

The source noted that the LPG will initially be purchased from petrochemical company ‘SIBUR Traders’ closely linked with the state structures of the Russian Federation and then redirected to Syria.

A spokesperson from Reuters explained that such a scheme is aimed at concealing the identity of the provider of LPG in connection with the possible sanctions from the West.

However, the press service of ‘SIBUR Traders’ explained that the company is not conducting trading operations with the Syrian government nor their private companies.

“SIBUR does not deliver and is not negotiating to supply LPG to the mentioned country, including in the framework of any government program,” the press service of the company said.
