WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew called on Greece to fully implement the recently reached agreement on a third bailout package for the country, the Department of Treasury stated in a release following the Secretary’s meetings with counterparts in Germany and France on the Greek financial crisis.
“During his trip, Secretary Lew also spoke by telephone with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos and underscored the importance of implementing the agreement fully,” the release read.
On Thursday, Lew visited Germany and France where he discussed the current situation in Greece with his European counterparts.
On Monday, Eurozone leaders reached an agreement to support the Greek economy with an additional $95.7-billion loan in exchange for economic reforms in the country.
The Greek economy, however, needs funds sooner than the scheduled arrival of the support package from the European Union.
Greece has to pay $3.9 billion to the European Central Bank (ECB) before July 20, while it already defaulted on its International Monetary Fund (IMF) debt earlier in June.
Greece owes $270 billion to its international creditors, including the IMF, the ECB and some Eurozone states.
