MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Thousands of passengers travelling to celebrate the Muslim Eid festival were unable to return home from Indonesia as several of the country's airports were closed due to the eruption of two volcanoes, CNN reported Friday.
According to CNN, volcanic eruptions and the subsequent closure of the airports has coincided with the celebration of the end of Ramadan, the holy month for Muslims, when traditionally thousands of people travel to their homelands.
Fresh eruptions from Mount Raung shut four small airports on Java island amid concerns over airspace safety, the broadcaster reported.
Earlier, national airline Garuda Indonesia announced that it had suspended flights to and from the airports of Malang, Banyuwangi and Jember in East Java.
Another volcano, Mount Gamalama on eastern Indonesia's North Maluku island, caused the closure of Sultan Babullah International airport in Ternate, the broadcaster reported.
Air traffic in Indonesia is regularly disrupted due to volcano eruptions, as the country counts some 130 of them on its territory.
