US Secretary of State John Kerry said that if Congress rejects nuclear deal with Iran, Tehran will develop a nuclear weapon.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Iran will develop a nuclear weapon if the US Congress votes to reject the nuclear deal with Tehran, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday.

On July 14, six world powers, including the United States, reached a final comprehensive agreement on Tehran's nuclear program. Now the US Congress has about 60 days to pass or reject the deal.

"If we don't do this deal, if Congress says no to this deal, then there will be no restraints on Iran. There will be no sanctions left. They will begin to enrich again," Kerry told in an interview to the CBS news channel.

Under the US Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015, Congress will have a final say in the adoption of the agreement, stipulating international sanctions relief in exchange for verification that Iran will not pursue a nuclear weapon.

Kerry added that in the case of Congress rejecting the deal, the United States will kill its opportunity to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, which may lead to a nuclear war.
