The international hacker group Anonymous claims it took down the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) website after they shot dead an activist with the group earlier in the week.

A man was shot by mistake by an RCMP officer late Thursday in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada. The RCMP had been called to a restaurant at the Stonebridge Hotel to disperse a man. He was reportedly flipping tables and destroying property of the local electric power company Hydro BC, that was holding a public meeting on one of its controversial projects which was met with opposition by aboriginals.

On arriving, the RCMP officers ran into a man wearing a Guy Fawkes mask and thought he was connected to the complaint. Police stated he refused to comply with directions and was shot to death.

"A confrontation occurred and the male affected person was shot," the IIO, local police watchdog, said, as cited by The Globe and Mail.

The wounded man was driven to hospital, where he died of injuries. The person who was causing the disturbance in the restaurant never faced the police.

The Anonymous group vowed revenge for their killed member, announcing Operation Anonymous down, #OpAnonDown. The hackers threatened to open identities of the affected RCMP officers.

"We will most certainly avenge one of our own when they are cut down in the streets while protesting the earth wrecking environmental policies of the Canadian government," the hacktivist group’s release said.

The statement also called on Anonymous members "to remove the RCMP cyber infrastructure from the Internet."

Sunday the RCMP website hack was claimed by the Anonymous as a part of the revenge operation.

It was the second police shooting in three days in British Columbia and the sixth since April being investigated by the local police watchdog IIO. Saturday officers killed a distressed man in Surrey. Civil liberties advocates are sparking alarm, local media reports.
