MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Some UK-bound immigrants have tried to swim across the English Channel to get from the French port of Calais to the United Kingdom, the BBC reported Monday.
Swimming across one of the world’s busiest shipping routes has been documented but it is unknown how many migrants attempt or survive the journey.
The majority of undocumented migrants attempt to cross into Britain using a ferry, a car or through the underwater tunnel, often with the services of human-trafficking guides.
Calais is a major ferry port in northern France, and the closest French town to England. At present, up to 3,000 migrants, mainly from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan and Afghanistan, are housed there, many of whom regularly attempt to illegally cross over into the United Kingdom.
Earlier in June, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve and UK Home Secretary Theresa May agreed to cooperate on the situation with the undocumented migrants in the Port of Calais.
