MOSCOW (Sputnik) – FIFA’s executive board has named the date of the congress as February 26, 2016, that is to elect a new FIFA head, set term limitations for the FIFA presidency, and determine reforms in the organization, Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko told R-Sport on Monday.
In June, following the breaking of a major FIFA corruption scandal, the organization's long-standing president Sepp Blatter announced he would resign, continuing to perform his duties until a new president is elected.
"The [FIFA] congress will have two issues. The first is defining reforms, and the second is electing the president," Mutko said by telephone.
Mutko added that a special work group would be established to propose organizational reforms to the executive committee in September, as well as presidential term limits.
In late May, the US Justice Department unsealed an indictment charging nine FIFA officials and five corporate executives with racketeering, bribe-taking and money laundering.
Seven high-ranking FIFA officials were arrested in May in Switzerland on a US federal corruption warrant. The suspects allegedly received some $150 million in bribes.
