BEIJING (Sputnik) — The comprehensive agreement reached on the Iranian nuclear program firmly defends the international nonproliferation regime and is a positive signal to the whole world, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a telephone conversation with US President Barack Obama.
The telephone conversation was initiated by the US side.
"The achievement of a comprehensive agreement on Iran firmly defends the international regime of non-proliferation and is a rewarding experience for resolving international disputes through negotiation, as well as a positive signal to the world," Xi said, as quoted by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Xi added that the UN Security Council's approval of the agreement made between the P5+1 group of international negotiators and Iran was evidence of "widespread international recognition and support" for these efforts.
The UN Security Council on Monday adopted a resolution to place Iran's nuclear program under international control, ensuring its peaceful nature and preventing the country from building nuclear weapons. The five permanent members of the Security Council, namely the United Kingdom, China, Russia, the United States and France, as well as 10 non-permanent members, unanimously voted in favor of the draft resolution.
The document was submitted last week to the UN Security Council by the US delegation and was based on the agreement reached between the P5+1 group of international negotiators, comprising China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany, and Tehran on July 14 in Vienna.
