The Syrian government understands the importance of Geneva peace talks on the military conflict in the country, Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader Halqi said. He added that the upcoming intra-Syrian consultations in Moscow could help organize the Geneva-3 talks.

Damascus Ready to Continue Dialogue With Peaceful Opposition
DAMASCUS (Sputnik) — The Syrian leadership is making every effort to convene a new reconciliation meeting with the representatives of the peaceful opposition, Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader Halqi told Sputnik.

“The Syrian government is making every effort for a [new] Geneva meeting to take place, but it is worth noting that the Geneva-1 was held around two years ago…and a lot has changed since the first Geneva talks,” Halqi said.

Haiqi added that the upcoming intra-Syrian consultations in Moscow could help organize the Geneva-3 talks.

According to Haiqi, Damascus does not diminish the importance of these negotiations, "as any meeting in Geneva without prior successful activities would not lead to anything but complicating the situation and would increase the danger in Syria, the region and the world."

Syria has been engulfed in civil war since 2011. Damascus has been engaged in battles on multiple fronts, against the so-called moderate opposition and numerous extremist insurgent groups, including Islamic State.

The hostilities in Syria have killed over 220,000 people, according to UN estimates, and displaced over 11 million, making it the globe's most dire humanitarian crisis.

Several rounds of reconciliation talks on the Syria conflict have been held in Geneva and Moscow but have so far failed to yield positive results.

In early July, Moscow expressed its readiness to host a third round of intra-Syrian talks. The date of the new round of consultations has not yet been determined.
