French authorities are currently working to remove the blockade, it said, adding that there was a diversion in place from the Boulogne direction. Day-time passengers have been advised to reschedule their journey.

The ferry workers are reportedly protesting expected job cuts. They set car tires alight on the highway from the Calais direction to block the entrance to the terminal, according to the BBC.

Calais has seen several traffic disruptions in recent months. Previously, African migrants, who had been residing at refugee camps in the vicinity of the city port, blocked the Channel Tunnel as they attempted to climb into cargo trucks to travel across to Britain. Several would-be stowaways lost their lives in the process.
