In a surprising decision from the 7th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago, the court ruled that prosecutors had failed to prove the former governor had broken the law. It is unclear whether Blagojevich will now serve less than his original 14-year sentence.
The Democrat was convicted on 18 counts of corruption in 2011. Eleven of those charges dealt with Blagojevich’s role in attempting to sell the Senate seat left vacant by Barack Obama’s election as president.
He was also convicted on other corruption charges related to using his position as governor to force public institutions to provide funds for his political campaigns.
