WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Monday, Washington and Havana officially reestablished full diplomatic relations and reopened embassies after more than have a century of hostilities.
The White House said in a statement on Monday the United States aspires to collaborate with Cuba on a number of common interests including counterterrorism.
“I have no specifics with respect to what a defense relationship could or would look like in the future. We are just getting started. We need to walk before we run,” Kirby said stressing that the relations between Cuba and the United States have not yet been normalized.
In December 2014, US President Barack Obama announced his administration would pursue a policy of normalizing relations with Cuba. The United States broke off relations with Cuba in 1961 and imposed a trade and travel embargo on the island nation.
