A heat wave in Japan claimed lives of 14 people last week, the country's Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) said Wednesday.

TOKYO (Sputnik) — According to the agency, which is in charge of ambulance services, 6,165 people requested medical assistance due to sultry weather in several regions of the country. The number is two times higher than the one registered a week before.

In Tokyo 578 people were provided with medical assistance, in Osaka 340 people sought medical attention. Majority of those suffering from abnormal heat — the temperature in some regions of Japan reaches 99 degrees Fahrenheit — are older than 65 years old.
