“We are assisting DPS [Texas Department of Public Safety] and the other local agencies in the ongoing local investigation [of Bland’s death], as well as monitoring for any potential federal interest,” Dunlap said.
On July 10, Bland’s car was pulled over for failing to signal by a Texas state trooper who arrested the 28-year-old woman after they had an altercation. The woman appeared to hung herself three days later while she was confined in a cell. Her relatives demanded an investigation.
Dunlap said the FBI is cooperating with all other agencies involved in the investigation.
“Once the local process takes its course, the FBI will review all of the evidence to determine if any federal criminal laws may have been violated," the bureau said.
On Tuesday, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) published dash cam video of Bland’s arrest by police. Shortly after the upload, DPS was alerted to a series of continuity problems in the 52-minute footage of Bland’s arrest.
DPS Press Secretary Tom Vinger told Sputnik on Wednesday that Bland’s arrest video had not been edited before it was released to the public at large. He explained the upload process affected the video’s quality and the department was working to ensure it is properly restored.
