The Islamic State militant group still controls one-third of the Iraq's territory, UN envoy to the country, Jan Kubis, said Wednesday, adding that the political process needs more vigor.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, the Iraqi government forces launched an offensive against the ISIL militants in Anbar province.

"One year after the fall of Mosul, a third of Iraq remains under the control and governance of ISIL," Kubis told the UN Security Council.

"The military offensives of the Iraqi security forces, with the critical support of the Popular Mobilization Forces, tribal Sunni volunteers, and the International Coalition, have yet to significantly change the situation on the group. Tikrit was liberated in March, but Ramadi fell in May. The Government's ongoing offensive in Anbar aims to reverse this setback."

According to Kubis, the political process in Iraq is moving forward, but without the needed vigor.

The UN envoy expressed confidence that "we can and we will work hand in hand with the Government of Iraq, political forces and civil society to achieve results in all areas, while increasingly mobilizing, notably regional support and cooperation."

The US-led Coalition of some 60 nations has been carrying out airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq, while Iraqi forces continue to fight the Islamic State forces on the ground.

According to the most recent report of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 3.1 million people have been displaced in Iraq since 2014 as the country fights the ISIL insurgency.
