WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) think the agreement between Iran and P5+1 negotiators accomplishes its goal of preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, US Secretary of State John Kerry said at the Council on Foreign Relations on Friday.
“Saudi Arabia just the other day with Ash Carter’s visit came out and said they believe…that it [Iran nuclear deal] accomplished the goal,” Kerry said. “The Emirates have told me, they think it accomplishes the goal.”
On July 14, Iran and the P5+1 group of countries that includes China, France, Russia, the United States, Britain and Germany have reached the final agreement that will guarantee the peaceful nature of Tehran’s nuclear program.
Kerry argued that if Congress rejects the deal, it will have a negative impact on the US ability to act outside the Middle East.
“It is a repudiation of President Obama’s initiative, and a statement that when the executive department negotiates, it doesn’t mean anything anymore, because we have 535 secretaries of state,” he explained.
On Wednesday, Kerry, US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew and a senior intelligence official conducted classified briefings for members of Congress promoting the deal with Iran.
