KAZAN (Sputnik) — The event, which Russia hosts for the first time, takes place from July 24 to August 9.
Competitions will be held in six disciplines — swimming, open water swimming, diving and high diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo.
"Our country is hosting such a tournament for the first time and we aim to hold it at the highest level," Putin said at the opening ceremony.
The president expressed gratitude to all participants and noted the contribution of the Russian republic of Tatarstan to the efficient logistics of the championship, stressing that Kazan pays significant attention to the development of sports.
"And let the strongest get the medals! But I'm sure the atmosphere of the championship, the spirit of fair competition, partnership and mutual respect will forever stay with each of you."
