WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Thursday, John Houser, 59, opened fire at The Grand Theatre in Lafayette, Louisiana shooting dead two women before killing himself. Seven other victims remain in hospital, one in critical condition.
“Every one of these big news shootings have been in gun free zones, and the reason for that is criminals don’t obey laws by definition. They will go in there knowing others aren’t armed because good law-abiding people won’t disobey law.”
Mercer noted so-called “open carry” laws granting the right to carry a weapon anywhere have been the norm for decades “if not centuries” in the state of Louisiana.
“Most new attempts to choke down on gun rights have been met with large amounts of resistance, and are unlikely to pass…Most people understand the plain language of the Constitution and understand… what the Second Amendment means.”
The Second Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees the right of the people in the United States to bear arms.
Mercer said in working to impose gun restrictions on Americans, President Barack Obama and politicians who suport such policies, appear not to know what the US Constitution stands for.
He concluded that open carry US states have less gun violence while the major cities with the highest incidence of gun violence and murders such as Chicago and Washington, DC have very restrictive gun laws.
