A foreign national may head the National Police of Ukraine in the country’s efforts to combat law enforcement corruption, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko suggested Saturday.

KIEV (Sputnik) – Earlier, the Ukrainian head of state named First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Ekaterine Zguladze as a possible candidate to head the Western-style force.

"I do not rule out that it may be a foreigner," Poroshenko said in an interview with STB television.

Zguladze, a Georgian national, has stated she was not yet ready to take up the post.

Poroshenko added in the interview that he was edging closer to signing police reform legislation into law, expressing the need to depoliticize the country’s law enforcement agency.

Until earlier this month, Ukrainian police was under direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The country’s first 2,000 US and Canadian-trained police recruits swore an oath on July 6.
