WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and defense contractor Northrop Grumman boasted of saving $7 million in software costs last year, however, their $41 billion Interceptor program to shoot down intercontinental ballistic missiles has been crippled by major problems.
“We are delighted to achieve significant cost savings in 2014 through efficiencies targeting best-of-breed code reuse and we anticipate even greater savings this year,” Northrop Grumman Information Systems Missile Defense Integration Director Ken Cox said in a release on Monday.
A new set of major technical flaws have been identified in the program, the Defense Industry Daily story said.
In collaboration with the MDA, Northrop Grumman launched over the past year an initiative to reduce software development costs while increasing productivity for software users working on ballistic missile defense system (BMDS), the release said.
“The initiative focuses on streamlining frameworks, interfaces and tool sets for use in BMDS modelling and simulation and operations,” it explained.
Northrop Grumman is also applying its experience processes expertise with common tool sets to optimize software design and development, the release said.
Modeling and simulation software plays a key role for affordable development and assessment of the BMDS, the release noted.
