Mohammad Akhgari, head of Iranian Press TV, said that the channel is facing difficulties because of covering the events that are silenced by West.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — UK authorities put pressure on Iran's Press TV channel for covering events silenced by the Western media, the channel’s director said Tuesday.

In 2012, the UK communications watchdog Ofcom revoked the channel’s license and forced it off the air. The following year its broadcasting was revoked from several European and US satellites.

“Press TV covers the events that are silenced down by West — for example, the death of two Press TV reporters in Syria… The US drones kill civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, but the Western media do not even mention it," Mohammad Akhgari said at a session during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization media forum.

He referred to the revocation of the channel’s license in the United Kingdom, cutting it off from satellites so it could not broadcast abroad and threatening to close its social media accounts.

"Our motto is to give a voice for those who do not have a voice. For this reason, we face difficulties," Akhgari pointed out.

In November 2014, Ofcom threatened the RT television channel with sanctions over what it claimed was one-sided coverage of events in Ukraine.

A poll conducted by ICM Research exclusively for Sputnik and released in May showed that 57 percent of UK respondents were interested in getting their news from alternative information sources.
