A few hours after being booked in the county jail, Saffioti ate breakfast and died.
The lawsuit detailed all the ways that jail officials knew, or should have known, about Saffioti’s allergies, and that they left him at risk of anaphylactic shock. It also stated that multiple jail employees, including four nurses, ignored the inmate’s medical needs and failed to provide treatment, Herald Net reported.
Despite what appears to be obvious negligence at the very least, prosecutors declined to file criminal charges against any of the employees.
The lawsuit also pointed to emails sent by a supervisor questioning the care provided by the nurses, and findings from the National Institute of Corrections, which called the medical care for inmates substandard.
Snohomish County got a new sheriff, Ty Trenary, in 2013, and he has attempted to keep inmates with serious health conditions from being imprisoned when charged with a nonviolent misdemeanor. He has also improved the medical unit and booking procedures.
This is the second settlement regarding Saffioti’s case, as last year the family settled for $95,000 after being told that jail security camera footage didn’t exist, when it did.
The case was officially settled this week for $620,000.
